Why examine shopper behaviour
The analysis of shop floor performance is primarily based on
financial results. Examination
of turnover and receipts allows the vendor to understand what their
customers purchased.
However, this only provides a limited understanding of shopper
behaviour. In order to
improve shop floor performance, the vendor must understand the route
the shopper took
through the store, and what influenced their purchase. And what of the
shopper who did
not make a purchase? What was their route and why did they not buy?
Choosing the right statistics
One of the most important measurements in retail analysis is
to count the number of people
who enter a store. From this it is possible to determine the conversion
ratio – the
percentage of visitors who make a purchase.
By collecting results over a period it is possible to build a
profile of the store’s performance
by time of day and day of week. This may then act as a benchmark
against which store
modifications can be compared. For example, the effectiveness of a
store promotion can be
evaluated. The attractivity of shop window displays can be determined.
Store layout can be
improved and conversion ratios compared.
Understand the benefits of change
By careful analysis of time-based counting statistics, the
vendor may improve performance
by allocating staff resources in line with measured demand. Peak
traffic times may trigger special promotions or events.
It may become clear that the cost of keeping extended opening
hours is not cost-effective and that the opening schedule can be
optimised.
Staffing levels can be adjusted to suit measured shopper visit patterns.
Multiple site comparisons
By collecting data from more than one store, it is possible to
draw comparisons between locations. A vendor can measure the benefit of
a specific campaign in a single store and then verify that benefit
across the whole estate. The effectiveness of advertising campaigns and
other store-specific promotions may be easily evaluated.
Precision is important
If store data is to be measured with confidence, the counting
sensors must be very accurate.
Blue Eye Video sensors are mounted vertically above the point of data
collection and
provide very precise bi-directional information. Accurately and
reliably. Blue Eye Video
sensors provide a measured precision in excess of 95%.
